Empowering Every Child—In Water and in Life
At Water Wombats, we believe every child deserves to feel safe, confident, and capable—whether they’re in the water or navigating the world around them.
Founded in Canberra by social worker and mum of three, Carol Jennings, Water Wombats was born from a deeply personal journey. After her eldest son was diagnosed with autism, Carol began to explore the unique challenges neurodiverse children face—especially when it comes to water safety. What she discovered was alarming:
“Children with autism are three times more likely to drown than their neurotypical peers. On average, there are eight non-drowning incidents every week—and many more go unreported.”

As Carol and her son struggled through traditional swim classes, she realised they weren’t alone. Many families were facing the same barriers. So she set out to create something different: a program that teaches children the way they learn.
Our Mission
Water Wombats is dedicated to providing inclusive, trauma-informed, and neurodiversity-affirming programs that support children’s development in and out of the water.
Why We Do It
Too often, children with disabilities are left behind when it comes to learning vital life skills like swimming. The statistics are confronting—and the need for inclusive, accessible programs is urgent.
But water safety is just the beginning.
At Water Wombats, we understand that many children need support beyond the pool. That’s why our land-based therapy programs are a core part of what we do. Whether it’s helping a child recover from water-related trauma, build emotional regulation through creative play, or develop motor skills with the guidance of an exercise physiologist—our goal is to meet each child where they are and help them grow.
We’re here to ensure every child—regardless of their learning style, diagnosis, or past experiences—has the opportunity to feel strong, safe, and seen.
Because when children are supported in the way they learn best, they don’t just survive—they thrive.
